Individuals with Medicare across the country choose to enroll in Medicare Part D to get help with their prescription drug costs. Even people who don't take prescription drugs need to consider getting Prescription Drug Plans. Although it is optional, it is still offered to everyone with Medicare. Each plan varies depending on the drugs covered and their costs.
Ways to Get Medicare Part D
There are several ways to get Medicare drug coverage. It is essential to get the specific Medicare drug plan personalized to avoid having unnecessary costs.
  • Medicare Drug Plans
This plan adds drug coverage to the Original Medicare, Medicare Costs Plans, and Medical Savings Account Plans. They must first have Medicare part A or Medicare part B to get a different Medicare drug plan.
  • Medicare Advantage Plan
You can get Medicare Part D through this plan. But to get them, the individual must have part A and part B to join the Medicare Advantage plan. Note that not all of these plans do not offer drug coverage.

Joining a Drug Plan
In choosing a Medicare drug plan, there are the steps to get prescription drug coverage:
  1. Check the Medicare plans on their website.
  2. Enroll on the Medicare Plan Finder
  3. Sign up for the paper enrollment form
  4. Call the plan

In joining a Medicare drug plan, the Medicare Number and the Part A and B coverage date are needed.

Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage
Medicare plans that cover prescription drugs have their specific formula and list of covered medications. The formularies cover specific generic and brand-name prescription drugs. Although all plans are required to cover certain medications, specific prescription drugs covered vary depending on the insurance company and their Medicare plan.

Before enrolling in the Medicare Prescription Drug plan, always check the Insurance Company's formulary to make sure that the medications needed are covered. Also, formulary changes from time to time.

The Prescription Drug Plan covers at least two prescription drugs per category.
  • Anti-psychotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Immunosuppressants
  • Anti-consultants
  • Antineoplastic
  • Anti-retroviral

Medicare Prescription Drug Plan costs
Medicare Part D costs differently each plan, insurance company, and location. It is because Medicare plans set their monthly premiums and expenses. Generally, each Medicare Part D requires a monthly premium. It is separate from Medicare Part A or B's monthly premiums.

If the individual has a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage, the insurance company may already cover the cost premium.
