If you have frequent hospital visits, you can opt to have Medicare. Once you’re eligible for Medicare, you have several options when enrolling in a plan.

You can replace the Original Medicare with Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplements insurance. The latter aid in making up for the out-of-pocket expenses of the Original Medicare. Read on to know the advantages, costs, and coverage of Medicare Supplements insurance.
Medicare Supplements Insurance
Also known as Medigap policy, Medicare Supplements insurance fills in the “gaps” created by the Original Medicare. However, to get this insurance, you need to have Medicare Plans A and B. Having Medigap policy with Medicare Plan A and B ensures you comprehensive and thorough coverage.

There are ten different Medicare Supplements insurance plans denoted by letters A through N in most states. Plans E, H, I, and J are no longer available, and most insurance companies only offer at least Plan A.

Advantages
Knowing the advantages of a product is the foremost step before obtaining it. Here are some of the benefits when you have a Medicare Supplement insurance:
  • Out-of-the-country coverage – Medigap plans cover emergency care whenever you need it during your international travels.
  • Nationwide coverage – your Medicare Supplements insurance will follow you wherever you are in the country.
  • Freedom to choose – Medigap insurance plans let you choose your doctor or hospital.
  • Peace of mind – Medicare Supplements insurance provides a great security blanket by decreasing out-of-pocket expenses and covers those not covered by Medicare.
  • Broader hospitalization coverage – plan holders will have an extra 365 days of hospital stays. These additional days can be used when the hospitalization coverage of Original Medicare is already consumed.

Coverage
As the name implies, Medicare Supplements supplements what’s lacking in the Original Medicare. Nonetheless, there are some services that Medigap does not cover. Dental, long-term care, eyeglasses, and hearing aids are some of the services not covered by the said insurance policy.

Moreover, the general rule with Medicare Supplements insurance policy is it only covers one person. For example, if you and your partner want Medigap coverage, you’ll need to get separate policies.

Costs
While all insurance companies offer the same standard benefits for each Medigap plan, they have different rates. Private insurance companies may price their premium in any of the following methods:
  • Community no-age-rated – charge premiums the same for everyone, regardless of age.
  • Issue-age-rated – base the rate on the age you first enrolled in the policy.
  • Attained-age-rated – the cost of premiums increase as the policyholder gets older.

Final Words
With the pandemic still rampant, you should take a closer look if you need to fill in your Original Medicare gaps. The information presented should help you to judge if Medicare Supplement insurance plan is right for you.

Thanks for helping me understand that you could use medicare supplement insurance's benefits to receive care if ever you get in an emergency overseas! My aunt is wondering if getting a supplement plan for her future health insurance could benefit her in any way. Maybe we should look around for an insurance agent that could help us with this.

It's nice that you pointed out how your Medicare insurance plan would follow you wherever you are in the country. Our grandfather is quite old now so I think we should have him take an insurance plan. There are quite a lot of options to consider so we should ask an insurance agency which would be best for our grandfather.
